This 3-piece junior kids drum set is just perfect for beginning musicians as each component of the Mendini by Cecilio MJDS-1-BL is thoughtfully crafted for young children. The hardwood shells of the MJDS-1-BL help provide for a sturdier structure that can withstand wanton banging and beating. The triple flanged hoops also help ensure a more durable musical percussion instrument, just perfect for young Ringo Stars. It already includes a 13 inch wide bass drum, an 8 inch tom dutifully mounted onto the bass, a 10 inch wide snare that’s also mounted onto the bass, and an 8 inch wide cymbal which is perfect for giving the Mendini by Cecilio MJDS-1-BL that unique high frequency rhythm that can only emanate for the metal piece. The drum throne can also be easily adjusted while the pedal for the bass drum is stable enough for providing the deep tones of the music. The overall design of the Mendini by Cecilio MJDS-1-BL, with most of its musical pieces inherently anchored onto the casing of the bass, gives it a very small footprint to you will not be bothered by it taking up too much of your precious space. This is just idyllic for the aspiring drummer to beat his or her way to drumming stardom.
What We Like about It – The Mendini by Cecilio MJDS-1-BL has a very small footprint owing to the unique integration of a variety of components to the main drum.
2Rhythm Club Bongo Drum by Remo
Age Range: At least 2 years old
If your kid has problems holding drumsticks and creating a particular rhythm, maybe you would want to give him or her the Rhythm Club Bongo Drum first? This may not be the youth drum set that you have in mind but the Rhythm Club can surely introduce even younger kids to playing with musical instruments just by beating or even tapping on something with their hands. For instance, if you have an older infant who is already more than a year old, maybe you have already noticed that he or she can actually tap an object with substantial force for his or her age. Because the bongo does not require any sticks to produce sounds, only the tapping or beating motion of the hands, the Rhythm Club can really be a great tool for training children to learn how to produce beats and rhythms. This way, when they do grow older and have learned to hold a pair of drumstick with which to beat the face of the drum, then they can progress to more complex kids drums. The head of the Rhythm Club is made of synthetic materials that are guaranteed never to fluctuate in pitch regardless of changes in environmental temperatures and humidity. And with a really colorful and fun design wrapping the sides of the Rhythm Club, we’re pretty certain your children will love this, too.
What We Like about It – The Rhythm Club Bongo is a different kind of percussion instrument that offers a more fun way to get into the groove.
3MJDS-5-BK 16-Inch 5-Piece Complete Kids / Junior Drum Set with Adjustable Throne, Cymbal, Pedal, and Drumsticks by Mendini by Cecilio
Age Range: 3-10 years old
If the Mendini by Cecilio MJDS-1-BL appealed to you, maybe you would want to consider the MJDS-5-BK youth drum set instead if you want a more complete kit for your aspiring drummer. The company does not have any recommended age group for this junior drum set, however. Instead, it recommends that it be played or used by kids that are at least 2.5 feet tall but not taller than 5 feet. We guess this will be a more apt recommendation although there might me children who are within the recommended height range but have yet to master the fundamentals of holding a set of drumsticks. Nevertheless, the MJDS-5-BK is essentially a larger version of the MJDS-1-BL. Additionally it comes with a 10-inch wide tom tom in addition to the 8 incher plus a 12-inch floor tom and a 10-inch snare bringing the total number of drums to 5. This is, of course, not including the 10-inch crash cymbals and an 8-inch hi-hat for a really more superb music and rhythm creation. The set can be easily assembled and disassembled for instant storage. However, because of the increase in the number of drums, you may need a much bigger space for this to really let your kid enjoy beating his or her way to the rhythm of his or her favorite tunes.
What We Like about It – The MJDS-5-BK is primarily intended for the novice yet very avid drummer fan. The completeness of the set gives kids a great opportunity to learn the art of drumming.
4Music Big Bang Drumset with Lights by Fisher-Price
Age Range: 4-15 years old
We know the Mendini by Cecilio looks pretty awesome as a starter junior drum set. However, there are kids who may be intimidated by the massive drums and cymbals, not to mention the loudness of the sound that these create. It may be deafening to the young child. Fisher-Price came up with a young child’s drum set that is perfect for pretend or make believe plays. Again, we would like to reiterate that your young tot will not really be creating wonderful music with the Music Big Bang Drumset since it is primarily classified as a toy. Nevertheless, the Music Big Bang can make for a very interesting pretend play as the set already comes with all the basics of a real drum set including a bass complete with a foot pedal, a metallic cymbal, and 2 snare drums for providing the rhythm for your young drummer. Now, here’s a bit of confusion. The recommended age is actually 4 to 15 years old although, based on customer reviews, the most likely recommended age is anywhere between 1.5 to 5 years old. The set is quite small and will look really ridiculous on a 15-year-old. Regardless, if younger children will be able to play this, they will be treated to a variety of interactive lights which bolsters the contention that it is more for younger kids.
What We Like about It – The Music Big Bang is a toy musical instrument that is great for simulating a superb drumming experience for young kids.
5Electronic Roll Up MIDI Drum Kit with Built-in Speakers, Foot Pedals, Drumsticks, and Power Supply by RockJam
Age Range: 5-10 years old
Most of the kids drums that we have today are marvelous pieces of musical ingenuity. Unfortunately, unlike the guitar or other smaller musical instruments, you simply cannot carry the drum set wherever you want to go. A solution has been found in the RockJam Electronic Roll Up MIDI Drum Kit. This is one of the best-selling electronic drum pads in the market today enabling your kid to roll the RockJam, put it in a carrying case, and then bring it with you to the park, grandma’s house, your kid’s friend’s house, or anywhere else. The RockJam comes with built-in speakers which you can also easily adjust the volume so you can tone it down a bit if you feel like rocking on your feet in the dead of the night. You can still do so without waking up your neighbors. The best part of the RockJam is that it allows you to upload into the RockJam all of your favorite beats so your child can practice these on the 9 drum pads that each create a distinct tune including a crash cymbal, high tom, snare, low mid, low floor tom, ride cymbal, and even an open and close hi-hat. It also features a Sounds Module which effectively replicates all tunes or sounds that your kid may need to create a fantastic rhythm. Here’s an added bonus: you can also connect your smartphone to the RockJam for a richer drumming experience.

6Drum Set Black Complete Junior Kid’s Children’s Size with Cymbal Stool Sticks by Gammon Percussion
Age Range: 3-8 years old
Let’s just look at the Gammon Drum Set as a larger version of the Mendini MJDS-1-BL that is composed of a wooden cased bass and two tom toms in a high gloss finish complete with a mounted cymbal. The set comes in a variety of colors – black, red, blue, green, and pink – which is perfect for having a more personalized touch to the drumming experience of your kid. At any rate, your kid will be learning how to create fantastic rhythms with this set a lot better. One of the strongest points of the Gammon is its superb craftsmanship. While it may not be like the things we see in rock concerts, it nevertheless, projects an image of sturdiness and class that is worth mentioning. Tuning the heads will reveal a sound that is of solid quality. The only downside is that the Gammon’s foot pedal and mounts are more of toy-like qualities than they are professional grade. But, given the fact that it’s primarily designed for kids as young as 2 years old, we’d have to agree with customers in saying that the Gammon is indeed a worthy child’s drum set.
What We Like about It – The Gammon’s ultra-glossy finish and sturdy construction make it more like a kiddie version of a real professional drummer’s set.
7Rock and Rhythm Kid’s Musical Instruments Wooden Drum Set by Hape
Age Range: 3-6 years old
Children don’t necessarily need a real junior drum set to stir their imagination. In fact, many child psychologists prefer items that are grossly different from the actual objects so that any discrepancy or gaps can be filled with the kind of product that only exists in the kid’s imagination. The Rock and Rhythm Kid’s Musical Instruments kids drum kit serves to stimulate and actually encourage the use of children’s imagination as they beat their way to pulsating music. The Rick and Rhythm has two small drums that simulate those of tom toms and a cymbal for creating basic rhythms. This should be enough to let your child’s musical creativity run loose. The wooden drumsticks are also thick enough to be held with ease so your kid won’t be complaining much. Just don’t expect the Rock and Rhythm to provide you with a concert-like performance. Nonetheless, to the young child, he or she is already a rock star every time he or she beats on the Rock and Rhythm.
What We Like about It – The Hape Rock and Rhythm is a fun way to promote dexterity, creativity, visual and motor coordination, and music appreciation.
8Electric Big Toy Drum Set for Kids with Movable Microphone and Chair by WolVol
Age Range: 3-6 years old
If it’s a concert-like, rock star performance that you want your child to practice, then WolVol’s Electric Big Toy Drum Set for Kids is the one to buy. Again, it is important to understand that this is a toy. Nonetheless, it’s a great musical instrument that also provides spectacular sound effects including melodies and songs that young children will love. There is also dance music that kids can try to beat to. Adding to the spectacle are lights that can really make the drumming experience more party-like. It’s a party like no other as the built-in microphone also gives your child the opportunity to sing along to the different tunes, melodies, and songs on the WolVol. The construction of the WolVol is sturdy enough although we don’t necessarily recommend letting your 6-year-old child to sit on the 8-inch high stool as this may not be able to accommodate the weight of your kid. The WolVol is more appropriate for young kids between the ages of 2 and 5 years of age. Nevertheless, it should be a great learning tool for your young tot to appreciate music.
What We Like about It – The WolVol’s sturdy construction plus the integration of a variety of music and light effects make it a wonderful toy for kids to start appreciating music.
9Desktop Drum Set by Westminster
Age Range: At least 8 years old
Honestly, we’re not really sure how to classify the Westminster Desktop Drum Set. To begin with, there’s no bass drum. It only consists of 3 tom toms and a cymbal all mated to a plastic stand. It does come with drumsticks which are, unfortunately, also made of plastic. Perhaps the whole idea is to train kids first on how to create rhythm with this kids drum set. By the time they have mastered drumming on the tom toms and cymbal, then they can add the bass drum. Sadly, you’d have to purchase another set. By then, the Westminster can be relegated to a fun desk accessory or as a décor on your kid’s bedroom. The set is actually small with the large tom only 6 inches across and the 2 smaller toms about 4.5 inches in diameter giving you an area of about 15 inches from the edge of one small tom to the outer edge of the other small tom. Regardless, the Westminster can play incredible sound for its diminutive size.
What We Like about It – The Westminster is a superb décor for your desktop. Of course, it would be quite interesting to see young kids actually play with it.
How We Chose the Best Drum Sets for Kids in Our List
Since the drums that we had in mind for this endeavor is primarily intended for kids, we had to focus on the developmental appropriateness of these kids drums. That’s why if you have noticed we have an entire range of youth drum set packages for toddlers all the way to tweens. It would be grossly unjust if we only focused on professional sets as younger kids will still not have the physical capabilities to use these larger musical instruments. That being said, we had to make sure the product closely matches the developmental skills of the age group of children it is intended for.
The individual features of the products were also evaluated. Unfortunately, we had to base these on the actual first-hand experiences of consumers especially those who have kids who are already using these items. It was imperative for us to check whether these musical instruments really did serve their purpose in real life. We looked for sturdiness, durability, and the overall safe construction of the set. This is particularly important for very young children as they are more prone to accidents. Design and manufacturing integrity were thus, important considerations which we correlated with the drum-maker’s reputation. If it can be demonstrated that the company has a well-established reputation, then we’d consider including their product in our shortlist.
Benefits of Playing the Drums by Kids
Everyone knows that playing music can provide a host of benefits than merely listening to our favorite tunes. While not everyone can play musical instruments, one of the easiest and most enjoyable musical instruments to learn to play is drums. In fact, serious drummers say drumming can have many health benefits. And when these are translated into the growth and development as well as health development of children, learning to play drums can be very beneficial, indeed. Here’s why.
- Drumming is essentially for everyone. It doesn’t really require an innate musical talent. You only need to be able to carry on a beat and you should be fine. Best of all, it actually transcends everything as every single culture in this world has some form of tradition that involves drumming. This can help kids in their overall development.
- Drumming is known to reduce stress as a form of diversion activity for the mind to focus on. Likewise, it has been shown that drumming can facilitate the improved secretion of natural endorphins making us happier and more content about ourselves. When kids feel happy, they are also able to accomplish many other things including their academic and extra-curricular activities.
- Drumming can promote a deeper sense of self-awareness. While kids may not realize it, every beat that they make actually synchronizes their brain activities. This leads to more active alpha waves which can help provide for a more relaxed state. This can be very helpful among kids who live in stressful environments.
- Drumming can be a great tool for kids to enhance their visual motor coordination as well as spatial skills. Beating the drums require an understanding of rhythms and patterns. This is translated into the coordinated movements of the hands and feet with inputs from the other senses.
The Bottom Line
Drumming is not just for rock stars and boy bands. It is definitely for everyone. While we don’t expect your kid to be a master of the drums and cymbals, we can guarantee you they will fall in love with our 9 best drum sets for kids in 2017.
